Executive Board

Lane Tobin '18, Co-Captain
Industrial & Operations Engineering
tobinl@umich.edu

Lane hails from Ridgefield, CT and grew up sailing on her Dad’s J/24. Beginning at age eight, she spent her summers on Long Island Sound at Noroton Yacht Club sailing optis and lasers in their junior program. She has also spent a lot of time on big boats, participating in the Noroton big boat program and sailing aboard her families boat, Frøya. After high school, she lived aboard Frøya, for nine months with her family cruising the east coast of the United States, the Caribbean, and the Bahamas. Lane is looking forward to sailing this spring with the team and improving her team racing skills.

Mason Wolters '18, Co-Captain
Computer Science
woltersm@umich.edu

Mason began his sailing career at 6 months old in a car seat on his parent’s sailboat in Southern California while sailing out to the Catalina Islands. After that, he grew up sailing scows on the shores of West Michigan and later transitioned to Lasers and 420’s while sailing on his high school’s sailing team. Mason is looking forward to helping the team advance to the next level of collegiate sailing as well as learning how to apply his dinghy knowledge to keelboat racing.

Jo Hummel '19, Long-Term Fundraising Chair
B.A. Economics, B.A. International Studies, Minor in French & Francophone Studies
johummel@umich.edu

Jo is from Grosse Pointe, Michigan, and her father’s proudest moment was when he smuggled her aboard Margaret Rintoul for her first race when she was 2 months old. Since then, she has enjoyed stalking her family’s sailing escapades on Yellowbrick and racing keelboats out of Bayview Yacht Club. Jo looks forward to coaching junior sailing at BYC and completing her second and third Mackinac races this summer.

Charlie Rogers '19, Treasurer
Computer Science
rogerscc@umich.edu

Charlie Rogers is from Traverse City, Michigan, home of the National Cherry Festival and a lot of tourists. A family friend taught him how to sail on Lake Leelanau in an Opti and a Phantom. Later on, while spending summers on Beaver Island, Charlie and his younger brother Ed often sailed to the uninhabited islands in the Beaver Archipelago for day trips of hiking and exploration. They also organized a few very informal races among the local island sailors. Since joining the team, Charlie has enjoyed learning how to sail competitively and hopes to improve his skills over the course of the next few years.

Sydney Thompson '18, Media Chair
Economics
sydthomp@umich.edu

Sydney grew up just 45 minutes east of Ann Arbor, MI sailing on Lake St. Clair out of Bayview Yacht Club’s junior sailing program. Upon graduating high school she began to coach beginner and racing optis in that same program where she developed her love of sailing and racing. She has recently gotten involved in big boat racing and sailed her first Bayview-Mackinac on Velero VII this past summer. Sydney is currently a sophomore in the College of LS&A and is majoring in Economics. She is excited to promote the team as Media Chair and work with other board members to help the team be at it’s best this coming year.

Michael Gapuz '18, Social and Recruitment Chair
Microbiology
mgapuz@umich.edu

Michael grew up in Orlando, FL and started sailing seven years ago out of Lake Eustis Sailing Club. There he learned to sail 420s and Lasers, eventually developing a love for racing. He knew he wanted to continue racing in college, and has had a great time developing his skills and fostering friendships on the team. Michael looks forward to improving his own skills and introducing more people to the sport in the coming years.

Amy Baer '19, Rec Sports Liason
Computer Science
amyjbaer@umich.edu

Amy is from Arizona but she learned to sail at her summer camp on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. However, her true passion for sailing was sparked by a three-week sailing trip in the British Virgin Islands her sophomore year of high school. After this trip she decided she wanted to become a collegiate sailor. Since joining the team her freshman year, Amy has improved her skills as a crew greatly and looks forward to continuing that improvement for the rest of her college career.

Matthew Greydanus '19, Short-Term Fundraising
Chemistry & Political Science
mattgrey@umich.edu

Matthew grew up sailing in Holland Michigan at Macatawa Yacht club. Matthew began racing keelboats at an early age with experience on his family's Tripp 47. At age 13 he transitioned from racing lasers and 420's into a job as a sailing instructor. With several Chicago to Mackinac's and Trip/Queen's cups under his belt, Matthew hopes to learn from the rest of Michigan's talented team and grow his skills as a dinghy and collegiate keelboat racer.

Austin Haag '20, Regatta Chair/MCSA Liaison
Business
aushaag@umich.edu

Austin started sailing in Minnesota when he was seven years old in what’s called a pram, which is essentially a little bathtub with a sail. He eventually progressed through 420s, X, M, MC, C, lasers and a 40-foot yacht, sailing for six days through the Apostle Islands on Lake Superior. Sailing became a central part of his life, and he completed his Eagle Scout project for his local sailing school. He was also a co-captain of his high school’s varsity sailing team, and as Michigan’s race chair he hopes to build upon those skills and advance with his teammates.

Sofia Gambini '18, Secretary
Evolutionary Anthropology
sgambini@umich.edu

Sofia is junior from Ann Arbor, Michigan. She is majoring in Evolutionary Anthropology and is planning on studying Human Osteology and Forensic Science after she graduates. She has done all of her sailing on Burt Lake, Michigan, at a summer camp where she currently works as a sailing counselor and soon-to-be Waterfront Director. While she had never officially raced before joining the team, she feels most accomplished in her ability to sail with a bunch of children in her boat, and likes to think she is fairly good at sailing ‘leisurely’. She joined the team to learn how to race and to improve her sailing skills overall, and is looking forward to being more involved with the team as she steps into her new position.
